About

Allie and Katie first met in 2008, in a class on James Joyce’s Ulysses and became close friends after one of UBC’s nerdiest events: the annual English Honours social. They spent the next few years sharing What-cha-ma-call-it Chardonnay and Granville Island Honey Lager, playing board games and pub quiz, and occasionally fighting the good fight in the always-messy arena of campus politics. Nonetheless, as is so often the case in life, most of the best moments in their friendship happened over dinner. Throughout the years, they surprised each other with fancy from-scratch meals or worked together to pull a last-minute dinner out of a cheaply stocked fridge. In September, Allie will be studying in Vancouver while Katie will be moving to Providence for a 5 year program. The aim of this blog is to ensure that, in addition to skype and cross-country visits, their friendship can continue to unfold in the same way it always has: over dinner. By swapping stories and recipes we can feel like we’re right there cooking together, and we hope readers will enjoy sharing those experiences with us also. “The Dough Also Rises” will mostly (but not exclusively) feature vegetarian options. While some of the recipes will involve more exotic ingredients or more complicated techniques, they will generally be meals that students can both afford and find the time to prepare. To keep our literary roots alive, we will also include a smattering of literary food puns. We hope you like it!
